yeah thats what i was getting at

my definition is that gambling is where you have no influence on the outcome of a random event - i.e like a roulette wheel .

in poker, you definitely have influence to go with the random events of cards - but if you are short stacked, then you are relying on getting cards, so it becomes more like gambling

See thread "NPL needs an overhaul" by Dug for a run down of peoples thoughts on this matter only a couple of months ago.

Sorry, my response was more along the lines of - "see here for how much I agree with this sentiment!"

I suggest Luck and Skill needed to win, which is greater on the Night will win..

gaining a big stack to play on the final table contains both...

a better/skillful player will play above the odds to gain chips.

doing this regularly with Skill will give you better odds // more times on the final table with more chips ...

I figure playing Skillfully will help increase your Luck[Odds].

both to gain chips and Win..... anywhere , any time/table , anything ---even in the Game of Life.

NO!! It isn't ALL luck.
There is an ELEMENT I do agree, but that comes in terms of the position taken by the player with the shortest stack.

Case in point:
At tonights game we had a lady that had the shortest stack at the table.
Her stack was $1,000 and blinds at this stage were $2,000/$4,000.
She managed to get position 9. (This is the one element of luck I will admit she needed).

The entire time she was on the final table she waited until she had a great hand to play, she didn't at anytime just call because she had an Ace in her hand. She played brilliantly.

From shortest stack on the table, she managed to get to 2nd position.
There were stacks of over $45,000.

If she had NOT had the mind to play and wait for good hands only, she would have been the first one out.

SO NO!!!
Luck isn't the only thing that you need to bring to final table.

JJ that is one of the most sensible reply posts I've read in a long, long, time. At PGdns & PHills gee I hope I can mention them here  I have gone to the final table so many times with less than the big blind and finished runner up.

We all know there is an eliment of luck from the very first hand. But we also know that there are player say like Bruce who are prepare to protect theirs and guys say like benny the cunt who says he is an aggressive player and takes risks. And I'm sure we all have a little of both in us.

Which one is right???? All of the above I think at one time or another. 8-) I'm surprised AK thinks it's only luck seeing he is/was regional leader. :o

And my best finish last season was a 3rd - LUCK!

:D

But seriously, there is a HUGE element of luck in the FT. Maybe its just the venues I play in, but I hardly ever see players folding the better hand (due to a bluff, etc) on the FT. With such high blinds, you're basically committing most of your chips preflop and hoping to hit/hold up (as previously mentioned, heads up is TOTALLY different).
