EURO 2008

Postby BigPete33 » Sat Jun 07, 2008 4:55 pm

EURO 2008 starts sunday morning!

OH MY GOD there's so much football to watch!

For those not in the know, EURO is like a mini World Cup. Held every four years (directly inbetween World Cups) it's restricted to national teams from Europe only and they have to qualify for the priveledge so what we'll be seeing are the top 16 teams after that qualification process. It's being held jointly in Austria and Switzerland.

Most of the worlds best national football teams will be on display with the notable exception of England who failed to qualify (gasp!)

The defending champions are Greece, and the teams to watch would be Italy, France, Germany, Portugal and Spain.

Guus Hiddink (bless his cotton socks) is coaching Russia and seems to have worked his usual magic so we could see some good things from them.

Spain are perhaps the most consistent under-achievers in the history of anything, ever. Sooooo much talent in that team! A lot of people are tipping them to finally break their hoodoo and make it to the final stages of the tournament. I'm going to be cheering my head off for them as they have quite a few Liverpool players in the side, Fernando Torres in particular.

The first match kicks off at 1:30am Sunday morning on SBS and it will be Switzerland v Czech Republic.

The official website which includes match schedules and group standings can be found here.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Sadly, no.

Seems to be one of the only ways to watch most of the games so demand would certainly be sky high.

OK we're now at the 1/4 final stage with the following teams progressing from their groups:

Portugal, Turkey, Croatia, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy (booooo), Spain (yaayyy) and Russia.

Portugal will play Germany
Croatia will play turkey
The Netherlands will play Russia
Spain will play Italy

I wouldn't want to tip in Portugal v Germany or Spain v Italy but I think Croatia will beat Turkey and The Netherlands will beat Russia.

GO SPAIN!
