I watched a replay of the 1983 qualifying final early this morn . Hawthorn v's Fitzroy .

1 thing that amazed me & 1 thing i always remembered .

1st thing , Fitzroy made their 1st interchange @ the 18th minute of the 2nd quarter , the Hawks 22nd minute of second quarter .

The thing i remembered , THE GAME WAS A LOT FASTER THAN IT IS NOW , no Rugby type scrums ,free kick was given the ball was given straight to the player "who kicked it straight away" no holding the ball for 25seconds .thinking where 2 kick it .
no 34 players in 1/4 of the ground .
It was a more Free-flowing game

DAMN I miss the good old footy days

you are obviously watching a different game in your head harps.

to say that the game was faster back then is just ridiculous.

I absolutely hate watching footy flashbacks on tv, only ones I can tolerate that arent from the noughties are the Crows GF's.

Watching games from the 70's, 80's etc. and even early 90's when theres about 4 people on the ground who have mastered the drop punt and have skills even remotely comparable to todays game, is painful to watch.

players like Matthews Eade Wallace Dermie Dippa Ayres Tuck Schwab Buckenara Judge Greene Mew O'halloran

Roos just to name a few . Since a lot have become coaches. To many other great players to mention

Harps the modern game is more skillful, faster and harder than it has ever been. there has been lots of scientific studies done that prove this fact.

Its debatable whether you think the style of the game is better or worse to watch across era's, and that comes down to each persons opinion, but the above things that i mentioned can all be mentioned, and are simple facts about the modern game.

OK but the old style was more free flowing . ie, not as many stoppages ball ups & the like .
So the games look like they where played faster . No umpire interference
