I caught the weightlifting event, and it was pretty cool to see that German dude get the gold. Didn't have me in tears or anything, but it was a great moment, I felt happy for the guy.
It would've been harder to concentrate on the Olympics after his wife died, I'll agree with that. At the end of the day, he lifted the heaviest weight, he's the winner.

I agree A-Klee... well done to the bloke.
I guess im trying to say, the death of his wife in no way affect his physical ability to lift weight.
Whereas with Ms Meares, her crash would have affected her a lot more because its both physical and mental.
That why I rate Meares effort way more than the weightlifting dude....
Anyway, its lunch time.... better do some work

as krunchie said though, he lifted his personal best by over 10 Kg - thats massive. surely he didn't just become that much stronger overnight - the biggest strength in that case is the mental strength to believe that you can lift that much.

But as has been said, sport isn't 100% physical.

Yes, but it's not 50% / 50% though. It's more physical than mental. And it also depends on the sport.
Weightlifting is more physical than mental.
Cycling you have to add in tactical as well... but still physical.
I'm just saying Meares effort is way better than the weightlifting guy.

She wasn't just his wife, she was also his training partner. They were both w-lifters, and she had been trying to make the Olympic team too. So not only would he have the grief at home, but also at his training.
Des, did your cat also play poker with you?
That's more the issue; that the olympics meant the world to both of them.
*ps well done Anna

wrong again des
at that level, they are all pretty much the same strength.
in the 105kg weightlifting, the difference between FIRST and LAST was only around 30%. the difference between finishing with a gold medal, and 6th spot was 10%
so it is DEFINITELY NOT physicality ALONE that makes you a good weightlifter. if it was all about physicality, then why doesn't the world record holder win every race he races? he IS the best and fastest out there.
its because most of the racing, lifting whatever, especially at olympic level, comes down to who can perform when the ultimate pressure is on them.
i would say top level sport would be 90% mental
(LOL des is 90% mental as well!

Re: So excited about the Olympics
90% mental? I'd say you're over playing the "mental" side of things there.
Sure, something like 10% of the variance in their performance might be put down to their state of mind during the event, but the only thing affecting their performance on the day to the extent that if you haven't done it, you can't perform 9ie. 90%), is preparation. Otherwise you're stating I, me, rcon, could be mentally steeled to win, resulting in me getting 90pts from 100 available - nothing for performance 'cause I'm crap), and the guy who is having an off day, but is professional, gets only 10pts because he is prepared, but his wife died???
Sure, you need mental focus to train hard and consistently put your best effort in, but that isn't what we are discussing here.
Matt - I appreciate your response to my post yesterday, and I'm writing you a response. note: i (strongly?) disagree with you
, but we'll get to that later. Work'n'all.
