Yep, I agree, it was a shocking decision!! When I made my initial comment that opened up the "umpires are humans" can of worms I hadn't actually seen the dismissal and was just saying that yes sometimes umpires do make mistakes (and they probably made just as many if not more in the past) but these days the bad ones are so magnified by the fact that we get 50 million replays of them in super slo-mo from different angles showing how ludicrous the decision was.
However as shocking as the decision was (and yes Daar should be penalised for his mistake) what I was trying to say initially is that you can NEVER expect umpires, even the best umpires in their chosen sport, to be 100% correct, it is just never going to happen, even using technology to make decisions is never going to be 100% correct, there is always a margin of error. Granted the number of "incorrect" decisions a top level umpire makes should be a few and far between, and should never be as bad as Mr Daar's, as they are paid lots of money to make the "right" decisions the majority of the time. They are paid the big bucks because they make a much higher percentage of "correct" decisions than your average joe bloggs who is getting paid $20 a game down at your local ICA, not because they are 100% correct with every decision.
I do think technology should be used where possible at top level sport so that these types of bad decisions don't happen as sometimes they just don't "even out". This also doesn't mean that every decision will be correct, even technology like hawkeye isn't 100% correct, just because hawkeye says a delivery that has hit someone on the pads was going on to hit the stumps doesn't actually mean it was going to, although the margin for error is much less than Aleem Daars eyes at full speed when it happens!
