That'd be great

No, it doesn't. That's a pet hate of mine. Even more so when 'time' is used in reference to that particular season.
Eg: Over the course of a season a team may have let's say 8 poor decisions that directly cost them the match - such as penalty or free kick decisions that were incorrect, if we continue with your football example. I'm deliberately avoiding little things like free kicks in a non-attacking position because they don't have the same scope to directly and immediately influence the match.
If someone was to say 'well it'll all even out in the end' which season at the end of which decade were they referring to? For that to even out that same team would need 8 also incorrect decisions (of the same magnitude) to go in their favour in the same season. I'd love an example of when that's actually clearly happened.
I'll agree it's possible for the same ref over the course of the season to make 8 shocking decisions and 'balance them out' by making 8 glorious decisions, but tell that to the teams he's shafted - particularly if they've just missed out on something huge as a result, or worse, been relegated.
Given that we're supposed to be talking about cricket, I think we all agree Haydos was pretty unlucky with his 2nd innings dismissal.
If that happens to get seen as 'haydos failed again' and it threatens his career.... just try telling him how it evens out in the end.
Try to remember he's a large bloke carrying a cricket bat though

Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!
