Metallica release new album....and it doesn't suck!

So one of the biggest thrash metal bands of the 80s are releasing their new album, "Death Magnetic" later this month (and for those that use the internet and lack morals, a leak is currently available). After the f*cking trainwreck that was St Anger, myself and a lot of other fans were pretty skeptical that Metallica had any life left in them - I remember all too well buying St Anger and the bitter disappointment that followed. So it was with low expectations that I downloaded their newy and I'm pleased to report that it does not suck, and is actually pretty awesome, really. Definitely their best since the Black album. And, on another positive note, this means that they might come back to Australia for a tour which would be great even if the album blew.

So yeah, discuss Metallica, the new album, or metal in general here I suppose.

To be honest, I didn't hate St Anger at all. It was different, and took a while, but there are some great songs on there.

In saying that, everything I've heard about Death Magnetic is extremely positive. Old school Metallica.

And yes, I have it. Got it last night. I haven't listened to it yet, apart from Cyanide, The Day That Never Comes and My Apocalypse. I'm trying to make myself not listen to it because I want to get it on the day and listen to it with everyone else .. BUT IT'S HARD.

I have listened to a few intros etc, and my appetite is whet!

The instrumental is f*cking awesome. It's a good album though, although I think Hetfield's vox let it down somewhat. He's never been particularly brilliant, and he's pretty average here as well. The lyrics are pretty poor as well in some parts, but apart from that, and Lar's annoying snare drum, it's very good indeed.

Hrmm, I dunno. I've re-listened to it a few times, and have just never found anything to really redeem it. Lars sounds like he's bashing on garbage cans, and his snare is WAY too high in the mix (the new album has this, but to a lesser extent), James sounds like he's doing a bad impression of his 80s era voice, each song is twice as long as it needs to be, the lyrics are ridiculous (Fran-tick-tick-tick-tock? Seriously?) And coming from the same band that released Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, it was just so disappointing. I suppose it wasn't utter crap, and suffered due to the high expectations put upon it, but I still maintain it is by far their worst to date.

Amusingly, the weak point on the album is The Unforgiven III, which given the fact I'm in the minority that enjoyed both the original and the Unforgiven II, is surprising. It's just dull.

St Anger wasn't perfect. It wasn't 80's. It wasn't traditional Metallica.

But eh, A band writes and plays what they want, and what they feel. We don't always have to like it, but it doesn't mean they failed, or the album is a failure.

St Anger had a real thrashy feel, like they played in a Garage. I liked that. Mind you, the sound on the DVD of them that came with it was far better than the actual CD itself.

I love Frantic, a highlight for me. I like Invisible Kid, very catchy.


And James will never sound the same. Chris, it's 20 years since Justice - I wouldn't expect YOU to sound the same in general conversation, let along singing after that long.

The Black Album tour totally screwed his voice up and he hasn't been the same since. He struggles to sing the old stuff (Like the recent concert I heard) and no matter what he does it won't be the same. That's ok, he adapts, changes and moves on.

On the topic - Some Kind of Monster is one of the best films I have ever seen. Always gets a top ten nod.

And yes, St Anger was IMO rubbish.
