I think a lot of players are calling when they have a big stack just because they can afford to. It's not the worst idea necessarily (or the best) but they're hardly in a position to complain then if they start bleeding chips. Particularly if it was bad play that got them the big stack to begin with.

Big Stack play should never equal calling with a wider range of hand.
Sometimes it can be raising and re raising with a wider range of opening hands than you normally would.
Chips=bullets. The army with the most bullets will eventually win, unless they can't aim correctly.
Keep firing and pushing people off pots, put lesser stacks to the test again and again and while your at it pray for some luck.
