Given that you said you were on the button - the person 2 places from you wasn't the BB was it? If yes, I'd have been instantly suspicious of the BB min raising. If not, a min raise in lateish position reeks of wanting a caller and I'd still have been instantly suspicious.

( Well, this is what I would have thought until the state final where the vast majority of any raise I saw all day in any position was only a min raise! We got Laura to stop doing that, only 19 odd thousand other players to go lol )

Yep, now I just need to convince people to respect my raises!

pete, he was in mid position, number 2 i think - so i knew a min raise meant pocket pair or AK.

when he checked the flop, i threw out an 800 bet more for information - the fact that he flat called meant that i didnt put him on aces because i thought he would raise with them (same with KK actually, but i think he respected my bet )

from his body reaction, i knew he didnt like the ace (he pretty much physically cringed when it came out)

so i decided to bluff. i know KQ was behind, way behind, and i wasnt trying for a straight or anything, i wanted him to fold the hand.

i think that based on the information that i thought i had, i played the hand pretty much right. the only thing was that it was KK, and he couldnt bear to lay it down. if it was 1010 then i am certain that it would have been my pot - only a slight misread.

but oh well, live and learn.

lol i didnt stick around to the end at the spot monday night, and i just checked - Rob ended up winning the tourney!

at least my chips didnt go to waste, but it does make me think that that could have been me!!

ill present the question in another way:

is there anything else that people would have done to make someone fold their KK to an ace on the board?

am i allowed to say to rob "if you can beat AJ, then play, otherwise fold?"

i wasnt sure if this was within etiquette/rules, so i didnt say anything, but i really wanted to, and if i did, i reckon he would have believed me and folded.

If you checked the flop, he might have believed you had an ace if you bet a substantial amount on the turn, or raised him if he bet.

I can't remember what the NPL rules are on the players involved in a pot table talking, but I thought it was ok as long as you didn't say what your hand was exactly. Of course, a lot of people don't like table talk because you look like a wanker.

yeah, in hindsight i probably should have check-folded, but if i won the pot, i would have nearly doubled up.

if my read said KK initially, i probably still would have put him all in to try to make him fold.

to represent an ace more effectively, a check on the flop would have been better, but initially, i wanted to see whether he pre-flop raised with AK or something, so thats why i bet. his call made me put him on pockets.

you are right pete, and i just chose the wrong time - but he VERY nearly folded, so it almost worked.

Just a thought for the future.
I always allow SOME table talk as long as it is heads up.
Where I draw a firm line is when people not in the hand start offering their opinion.
As to you declaring that you have an ace or ace jack.....hmmmm borderline!!
I would have maybe gone another way. If I was asked if I had the ace or not my reply would have been........"well if you dont have it, just keep putting your chips in. I need to double up!"...and smile BIG!!

I've got no issues with the last part you mentioned, Darren. It's ambiguous.

What is completely wrong IMO, is stating something yourself about the contents of your hand, ie "I have the ace", or "I've hit the flush/2 pair", etc etc. If it's up to me, that person is now compelled to muck their hand.

I do agree to an extent. But to be perfectly honest....if you are listening to the other guy in a heads up situation, you pretty much deserve what you get!
