computer question

Postby Chelsea4thewin » Fri Jul 11, 2008 3:45 pm

hey guys

thought some of u might know a few things about computers

my home pc is currently running broadband through the usb cable connection as this computer does not have a network card or cable so im unable to use the Ethernet port

now the question is, im looking at getting a laptop in the next couple of weeks while the sales are on and want to know if i can still run wireless broadband via a router if the main broadband (home pc) is connected through USB? or will i need to get a network card and port?

also how hard is it to install the network card/port? ive been told the connection would run a lot quicker with an Ethernet connection

thanks Steve

What your main PC connects to the the router with means nothing.

It's like saying "If the door on bedroom one is locked, can I still get into the lounge room from bedroom two"

Irrelevant.

The USB cable is JUST so you can connect your PC to the router.

If the Router has wireless capabilities, then you can connect to the Internet from a laptop with a wireless adapter installed easily enough (Just use security).

Think of the router as a computer itself, which it basically is. Your PC doesn't come into the equation.

Depends what you want it for.

The DELL laptops are really nice and very cheap.
HP aren't bad.

what will you be using the laptop for steve?

if u are only gonna use it to surf the net and maybe use some office applications, then there is no need to even spend 1500

u can pick a decent laptop for around 800 bucks these days (by decent, i mean for non-nerds)

i had a toshiba labtop, and that did me well - i have had it for like 6 years now, and it still works, although its pretty stuffed now - the only thing that isn't working is the optical drive, i have been through 3 of them! but i think that was more me throwing it around and taking it to uni every day for 5 years

mainly just for surfing the net and using business aplications like MYOB

i guess maybe 1500 is too much for what im using it for, i might go check out harvey norman sometime this weekend for some prices

just had a look at the Dell Website and the Inspiron 1525s look pretty good at $1100, anyone own a dell? are u happy with it?

Dells are really nice - I've used a fair few of them (along with other brands). I would safely say you can't go wrong.

Wait for the Sat/Sun papers - they usually have a DELL ad in there (glossy type)

if you don't need interest free etc and you are looking to buy the laptop outright, DON'T go to harvey norman, radio rentals, A&R etc, they are horrendously overpriced

try
www.msy.com.au
www.getright.com.au

these are MUCH cheaper, but teh catch is they are nerd shops, so u gotta know exactly what u are looking for

it is pretty easy to find the model number of the laptop u want though
