kinda tough.

like asking what happens when you put a boat in the murray.

the water gets displaced still but the effect is over the whole river, so you would hardly notice it.

in this case i think it would just be the weight of the water and not the ship

the problem with something like this being free flowing is how you actually get up and then down again at either side. there pretty much has to be at least 1 lock at one of the ends

Yeah, that's why I thought it was a really cool question...

G'day ,

http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/e ... g99554.htm

Question: When designing a water bridge, does the
bridge have to be designed to withstand the
additional weight of ship and barge traffic, or just
the weight of the water?
---------------------------------------
Hi Aal,

In a water bridge, such as the amazing one that was recently
opened in Germany shown in the photo here...
http://www.funonthenet.in/content/view/223/31/
...the bridge only needs to withstand the weight of the
water. This is because when a boat floats on water, it
displaces its own weight of water. That means, that the
volume of water that the hull replaces, weighs exactly as
much as the boat does. The water that the hull displaces, is
replaced by a boat that weighs exactly as much as the water
used to.

Regards,

Bob Wilson

The simple answer is that no, a ship will simply displace its own weight of
water and no extra weight needs to be supported by the bridge.

Engineering structures are designed typically with many other considerations
in mind besides the normal weight to be carried. For example, structures
typically have a "safety factor." A safety factor of three, for example,
means that the structure will actually support three times the design load
without actually failing. Other important considerations for bridges (and
buildings) are wind loading and earthquakes. So a full answer to this
question would require the expertise of a civil engineer familiar with such
projects.

Where does the weight go? Unless the water is free flowing, either over the edge, or out the ends, then the water level will rise as the boat is lowered and the total weight will rise. If the river is like a container with the water right to the very top, then when something floats in it, it displaces water, yes the weight of the ship is not included.

Something to consider tho, I strongly suspect the weight of the boat would be fairly insignificant compared to the water? 900m long wasn't it? I wonder how deep it is?

It has to be free-flowing. Otherwise, the weight of the boat needs to be taken into consideration.

A double lock was constructed to descend to the Elbe-Havel Canal and a single Rothensee lock was constructed at the other end of the water bridge to descend to the Elbe and the Magdeburg harbour.
