in place of a home phone, you get a voip phone instead, and all of your phone traffic runs over the internet rather than in the telephone bandwidth.
this is great for those of us that really only have a home phone because of the need for the internet. it is also much cheaper, as the phone call rates are cheaper, and there is no line rental either.
the reason some of us aren't on this is because some households cannot get adsl2+, only standard adsl. (if you are on a rim, paired gain or too far from the exchange)
so by definition, naked dsl == voip phone
That's not entirely true.
There is absolutely no need to have any kind of voip active with naked dsl, nor is it a requirement. Unless of course you still want to have to hold onto some kind of phone to make calls and don't mind still having to pay for doing so.
Tell everyone to get on skype or xfire or whatever and just use a headset. It's free.
The 'naked' part of naked dsl simply means the voice component of the total package (as we currently know it) has been removed and therefore it does not have a dialtone. In short, in the telephone exchange it's not connected to the telephone part - only the internet part.
This also frees up the bandwidth that was reserved for the voice communication and makes it available for internet data communication.
This also means you can be further from the telephone exchange and still get it and your overall connection speed may increase.
