Just another idea.
State Finals.
When I started playing NPL I started because I thought i was good and also because the first prize could have been a trip to play in Las Vegas. Alas i came 2nd won year and missed my chance to go to Vegas.
I still think I am good but there is no way the missis will let me pay $10000 to enter a poker tourney thats why I play free roll.
I still want to play with the best and my best moment was playing in the Aussie Millions opening event and on my table including gary Benson, Mel Judah and Shannon Elizabeth. If anyone gets the chance to play even at the opening event now though it $1000.
So this is my idea.

At the state finals do prizes similar to this format.
Change prize pool to $20,000.
4th through to 9th place. All win $250 virginblue/jetstar voucher plus crown or hotel voucher for $250.
1st through to 3rd also wins entry to the opening event of the next Australian poker championship (normally cost between $230 and $1100)$500 flight and $500 hotel voucher and represent NPL. Flights and hotel would be covered by the vouchers.

You can also divide cash amongst the top 20 or so.
The next part.
The top 9 from all the state finals through out the year qualify for the NPL night of champions at crown in late Dec /early Jan. this is where the players can use their flight vouchers and accomodation vouchers.
The winner wins entry to the main event at Aussie Millions and the opening event plus Flight voucher and hotel vouchers for the three weeks of the Millions.
2nd - 5th wins opening event ticket and hotel voucher for the night.

the tickets will be paid for by the reduction is prize pool from $25,000 to $20,000.

With five states the maximum is 45 per state. So 225 players max.
It could be held anywhere is Australia really as you have given people hotel and flight vouchers. By giving out the hotel and flight vouchers you have left it on the players to book the flights nad hotel for the NPL night of champions. if they fail to attend they can use the vouchers for something else.

This is another little thought. As a give support the people that support you. My idea is any winnings over $1100 you give 5% to NPl and 5% to your favourite venue. You still get to keep at least $1000 and the NPl and venue can only grow from your support.

Interesting concept.

The cash vs. tournament entry has been debated on here before, rather quite extensively.

I like your concept, but we do offer entries into casino based tournaments every season this year.

Also if we reduced the prize money on offer during the main event from 25K to 20K there would be a fairly large uproar.

I have an idea in the bag of my mind to offer a freeroll where the winner wins entry into a tournament but the top 10 of the field also have "a stake" in that player. So the player would win 50% of his winnings with the other 50% to be distributed amongst other players.

In terms of what Crown is willing to do, it's a new year and we have many different objectives and goals, and with our launch of cash buy in events in season 2 we can expect some negative vibes from Crown.

I don't think reducing the prize pool form $25,000 to $20,000 would cause that much of an uproar if.

Example ANZPT in Adelaide main event is $3000.
Winner gets entry to major event worth $3000, hotel worth $500 maybe flights $500 Then $3000 cash.

Runner Up Opening event $1100, Hotel $500, maybe flights $500 and $1000 cash.

3rd main Opening Event $1100, hotel $500, flights $500 cash $500.

4th-9th All get hotel $250 and flights $250. cash $100
To cover for the end of season tournement.

Total so far $17900

10th $200 little bonus as not competing at main event.
11th-30th $100

You can save the money on flights the main event is in that state as well as the NPL end of season.
In that case extra $1750 for the prize pool.
Technically you wont be reducing the overall year prize pool as there would now be 5 x $20,000 state plus end of season $125,000 champions event. as the $25,000 per state will be pooled for the champions event.
Total $625,000

Instead of current 5 x $25,000 per state. $125,000 a year Total $625,000
This is based on 5 states.

so sunbury, are you saying basically that you would use 5K of the 25K prize pool for entry into the big events, in lieu of cash?

i think that is a pretty good idea


for example, the SA state finals winner gets 10K. now, that is awesome, but 6K plus an adelaide main event entry plus 1K hotels/spending money would be better i reckon.

and i agree, i really want to play in the big tourneys, and this is a way of doing it.

We have had this discussion several times, especially in regards to the tournament entries in lieu of cash prizes or partial payments.

I am happy to survey all players once again, when we have the mechanics for it set up, and see what the response is.

Last time we ran a survey the consensus, in Victoria, was for total cash prizes.

Here on the forum it was about 60% for cash prizes and 40% for tournament entries with cash prizes.

I can only speak for myself, but I would love to at least have the chance to play in a big tourney, but if I said to the wife I am using the credit card to purchase a $3000 poker ticket, I am sure that would be the last I saw of her, unless I won and I am pretty sure all I would get would be the $3000 to pay off the credit card and she would get the rest.

But yeah I would use $5000 from each state final to make a super end of year final. The top places still get paid and a chance to win more money for them, NPL and the venue. Could kit them all out in NPL shirts and stuff

This totals about $90,000 then you have either $10,000 for remaining places or $35,000 depending on number of states.

Just so you are aware.

We run the competitions in VIC, SA and TAS.

The other states are operated by a differnet company so for your calculations you would have to use only two states, Vic and Sa.

Tasmania does not have the size prize pools that these two states do and very little could be removed from them.

I am sure people don't mind playing for money but to be honest
$10000 not really life changing. I won $3000 for second and that basically just meant my kids had a good christmas and half the credit card paid off.
if you shave $5000 from each state final then create a champions final with all states competeting for an Aussie Millions for a chance at $2 million and cash of $10,000 or $15,000 then i think this will create more interest.

If Tasmania can shave the $2,500 of their $20,000 state and the other two shave of $5000 of their $25,000 state pool then this will still be $62,500 for NPL Champions night.

7-32 just win cash.

Means Final 4 tables all get paid and NPL has 6 people wearing their branding in the Aussie Millions. 1 Main and 5 in opening.
Flights and hotel for the champions night would already have been paid for by the players finishing in the top 9 of their state. (See previous post)
So by finishing 32 you would still have won a small cash amount but also flown somewhere and stayed at a hotel

I'm not saying my way is any better than what is currently available, but at least this way you will be combining all states and getting a true National Poker League champion and not Victoria, SA Poker League champion. etc etc
