Player of the week

Postby nevvawon » Tue Jun 10, 2008 10:29 pm

When will be seeing the player of the week announced on the NPL site? Everytime I click on it , it says that there is no player of the week. Is it hidden somewhere else??? :?:

Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

My thoughts on Player of the Week

Postby rcon » Wed Jun 11, 2008 1:56 pm

If only I had the presence of mind to rock up and play 2 more games, even with no cards and just walked out after 1 hand, I'd have me a ticket about now.

It will be interesting to see if the current format is kept after this season. i love the idea, however I'm personally thinking the removal averages is going to take away from the concept. I don't really have a concrete proposal here, but keeping it at total points is going to keep people like myself from pursuing it - i had a good week last week, and still only managed 12th with 8 games. i had a 1st, 2nd, 6th and a 12th and 4 DNPs, and only the 12th was in a small field, the rest were all 60+. Whilst this would have secured me a ticket in week1, I'm pretty sure there will be a very small group of player who will make the 1st weeks points tally look rather small. I like to think I support my NPL well, but I can't spend that much time/$$ week in week out, yet if I knew the skill level I displayed was more likely to get me up that board, I might be more inclined to chase points.

Maybe something like most number of final tables in a week with 1 win being the qualifier might be an idea for "Player of the Week"

I guess my point here is that spending $200+ to card up for the purpose of chasing a $45-$450 ticket isn't a good use of my $$.
I was not chasing a ticket last week, and whilst I would have liked one, I'm not particularly disappointed - I just thought I'd share my opinion on the matter as I'm sure there were people chasing it, who might end up thinking the same - I'd hate to see such a good idea scrapped because only a very few people were chasing it, far better to have many more punters in the hunt, spending up in the pubs?

the 3 game "qualifier" is completely unnecessary - you aren't going to go anywhere near the top of the board without playing in at the very minimum 4 big-ish fields, and placing very highly in all of them. Perhaps the qualification could be 4 points finishes? Would also keep the list slightly more manageable.

slightly different topic, the "next week"/"previous week" links perhaps should be made a little more prominent? and perhaps place a link on the front page? i've spoken with a number of players who have been unable to find the board.

<end ramble>

I agree that the "3 games average removed" method for the player of the week leaderboard would be a better method of attracting more players to play more games. Although it's still tough for a player who plays 3-4 games to get player of the week, it makes it more possible and therefore more people would aim for player of the week. This makes the most sense and is in line with the top 50 leaderboard method

HA! I originally wrote my post in this thread, but moved it to a new one as it was *mostly* off topic.

Hi All ,
I agree and understand where you are coming from with spending some much money a week to chase ponits, i'm lucky in where i love the social side as well and because of that and the moneys not that big of a deal to me, it is a little unfair that players like myself have this un fair leg up with haveing all of our games for the week add up to a total for player of the week. I like the idea of only your best 3 games for the week count and the aveage you have over the 3 best places only would make it a lot fairer. I love the fact that if i play 10 or more games i would more then likely be in the top 10 , with poor performance and other great player with 3 final tables out of 3 would miss out, when in my mind they have shown me that there are the better player that week, i'll get them the next week! Just my to cents worth..

i dont see the point of persuing it if ur going to easilly spend more then the prizes on offer from 2nd to 10th on just food and drinks

buy in for ur own money and see how u handle a REAL money tournament
