when i sit in for a tournament my number one goal is to make it to the money (or points as it would be), what happens after that to me is an added bonus. Why do i take this theory? well firstly its alot easier to make it to the money then to actually win a tourney, secondly to set out to win every tourney is just setting yourself up for disapointment and resent for the game. Consistently making it to the money or points will also achieve a goal which is to be a winning poker player, be it either an bankroll that increases or accumulating points in npl which qualify you for npl finals.
I believe that before starting any game you must figure out what you wish to achieve. In the case of a league such as ours, a result of top 15 each week at a venue will pretty much get you a top 5 position, so to me would be mission accomplished.
As far as players who fold their way to points, that is always a risky move as they are reliant on other players being eliminated before they themselves get blinded out. I love nothing more than to be on a table which goes super tight right around the bubble. Its a great time to push and pick up some easy chips, without risking your own stack. Have to be sensible when using this tho, if terry super tight raises and pretty much pot commits dont think you can push him off with a raise just because of the bubble.

I'm the same. 10th-15th? Depending on the hands I had and the way I played them (or didn't), the night's a success. Final table? Night's a complete positive. I don't care if you had $100,000 at the start of the final table, you made the final table, which ain't easy, shut up and take your top 9 spot.
Saying that, I've folded to scrape into the points before. Everyone does it - and most of the time, that K, 4 or 6, 7 would've won you the hand, so its your own fault.
My goal last year was to win my first NPL tourny. I did that (in the final week of the season, mind you
Setting realistic goals for yourself is far more achievable than aiming to finish 1st every week.
A final note, the points system is always going to get detractors, no matter what the system's like.

Re: What's hot- what's not
I agree... discussions are getting very heated and arguments are occuring.
People really need to just go back to the basics and enjoy themselves. I'm included in this group... hence me not playing 2 venues this week just because I needed a break (and those 2 venues i was in the top 5 too).
We are all friends here, NPL staff and players. We should be working together to make things better instead of whinging, sniping and stabbing people in the back.
See ya's at Pooraka tonight or the teams event on Sunday.

Re: What's hot- what's not
Well, As much as I am bound to jinx myself from here on in, I am enjoying this season due to the very fact that Matty Norwood stated.
I have set myself to make points as much as possible, however have also been playing the cards. There are a few players in our region who will fold good hands just to make the points. I see no sense in that and figure we are out to play poker so we may as well play it. I also back my game play in against the majority I play against and fortunately it has paid of more times than not.
So far so good.. I have played 13 times, been in the points 12 of those times and been on the final table 9 times this season. I am sitting 6th in the region and played less games than anyone in the top 13. I also have the best average out of anyone in the region who has played more than 10 games.
We have had a few issues in our region this season. And yeah, I like to stir the pot a bit.. I hope I haven't fueled these fires. At the end of the day I love going to the poker because of the brilliant way it is run, the laughs I can have and the great people I get to catch up with. Yep, I'm enjoying myself this season!

Re: What's hot- what's not
What's wrong with sorting players by their best average PER VENUE?
ie The sum of the Round Scores divided by the number of completed rounds (not games entered).. per venue.
People that play more often are rewarded the increased probablility to have a higher venue average. (More venues visited mean more chance for better scores)
It also rewards players who enter regularly at single venues also as not turning up lowers your average.

I disagree... for example... the Palais
The week 1 winner will have an average of 90 points or so... based on 80 runners
Thus they dont need to play the other 9 weeks. It just wouldnt work.
