Aarons discussion got me thinking


a random unknown shoves. you have no idea at all about his range, absolutely none. it could be really wide, 100% even, or it could be Aces only

you get the choice of taking either AJo or 88.

Tell me which hand you would choose and why. i am expecting you to think about different which hands do better against what ranges.

for those that have pokerstove, please dont use it - i want you to think about what you would normally do, then we can talk about the maths later.

Are the 8's suited?

I'm taking the 8's. If he's shoving with an Ace, or suited connectors, I feel I'm in front.

I can fold AJo easier, but against an unknown shove, I'm taking the made hand.

Is the AJo UTG?

All depends on the situation.....


If player with short stacks shoves and I have 88s I would call thinking they are playing with any ace to double up and therefore I am slightly in front of the race.

If player shoves with an average/big stack I would prob put them on low pockets (2,3 or 4s) unless they were an extremely tight player and thus call with 88s

I am not a big fan of AJo.....unless I am the one raising with it

You have to assume that the player raising might probably have AK or AQ and thus you're drawing to a three outer (unless you get running cards)

I think it is about the same. What range do you put the average player on who shoves preflop? Does this seem about right?

AK/AQ/AJ
A10s/A9s/A8s (AXs??)
KQs/KJs/K10s (?)

its not whether we call or not, we have already decided to call, then we get the choice of 2 hands

stacks do not matter either. assume they are 1 million BB it doesnt matter.

all that matters is the range of the other person

with your graph trishan, i think you need to think about how many combinations of each hand there are

look at the cards A and K for example. in total there are 8 cards to choose from.

doing a bit of combination theory, there are 28 combinations or A and K. 6 combinations of AA, 6 of KK. that means there are 14 AK combinations.
