Bad beat story + (mini) whinge

AA is a great starting hand, and I'm far from one of those people who complain that 'AA gets done ALL THE TIME'. Only for people who can't let go of it - it is a starting hand after all (see thousands of other posts for further information ;) )

Anyway, I have had AA cracked a few times lately, usually after raising hard preflop, betting aggressively on the the flop and turn, only to be rivered (or even turned if all-in by this stage) by someone holding an underpair (a TD and a forum regular have done this one lately :D ), gut shotted (I can't fathom this play - all-in on a gut shot with no odds) or my personal fav was yesterday on the Paddle Steamer at Murray Bridge

Scene setter - I've just bet someone off a hand where I would have rivered a royal - someone didn't realise the hand was over 'cause I exposed my cards and they ran out the river.

Next hand, I look down at AA from the button - I pretend to be on tilt from missing out on my royal.

There are 2 limpers, so I raise 4 times BB.
SB calls, so does Late Position.
flop comes down 3J7
SB is all in,
LP calls.

SB I put on AJ, KJ or something involving 2 high cards, one being a J.
LP I am worried they might be holding 77 or 33, but I've seen some very loose calls from them whilst holding 2x picture cards.

After careful consideration (I have been burnt a bit lately with AA), I decide to call.

SB rolls over, wait for it, 10 3.
LP, not much better, AQ

WTF?

Turn 10,

I really need the board to pair.

Whoops - another 10 really wasn't what I wanted to see.

Anyway, I can deal with that sort of bad beat - after all, you want people making stupid plays like that. But here is the frustrating bit.

/start whinge

Whilst playing the bad beat table, the guy with 10 3 went and criticized someone else for playing flippantly as the bad beat table was the only thing left to keep everyone occupied! This is probably the first time I've been frustrated with someone for bad play (his play with the 10 3 earlier)- free poker is free poker, but the paddle steamer isn't exactly a cheap trip in time or $$. But you do take this into account, so I can't blame anyone for the way they play. But the hypocrisy was rather stark.

Grrr.

/end whinge

And if you didn't pretend to be on tilt?

Mr T3 probably thought you were on tilt, and hey if you were holding something like AQ or big slick, then he probably wins the hand.

Yes he semi-bluffed and got lucky in the end - but i can definately see where he was coming from (not that i would have done the same thing myself mind you).

Hey, at least he was being aggressive and getting his money in the pot first - its rarely a bad play and much better than being a conservative no-nuts calling station.

So you did the right thing, and although he got lucky, i have seen many many worse plays than this.

Nah - the tilt act wasn't for his benefit. Don't get me wrong - I want him to play like that every single time I'm in the hand with him, but he wasn't interested in "reading the play".

As I said to him - "I put you on Ace Jack, but I've got bullets, so I call". He goes, "Nah, I've got a pair of 3s, but I just thought I'd see what happened" (or something to that effect)

It was mostly the thought that he went and berated someone for playing "silly, because this is all we have to entertain ourselves with until the boat docks" that I thought showed a really lack of thought.

If he was actually making a move on the pot, I'd be all for his play. But he wasn't.

I don't often get frustrated with how poker rolls, but this one did slightly erk me when he piped up with that at the bad beats. As the hand played out, I was quite happy - I want people to take those risks against me. I suspect my post needed a few more smilies - it perhaps sounds a little down.

Absolutely - even the AQ calling the all-in was worse than this    w2g storm!

Yeah true, i hate it when bad players berate others for bad play.

If i ever get a bad beat i ask myself the question - would i do the same thing if i had the same situation? if the answer is yes, then i'll go home happy.

If the answer is no, and its me that got my money in bad, then im just as annoyed with myself if i suck out and win the pot as i am when i lose the pot.

I actually told that story wrong.

On the flop, Mr T3 checked,
LP (AQ) checked,
I bet over half of everyone who was left's stack (probably around 400?)

That is when T3 goes all in, AQ calls all in

I call.

I knew I'd missed something - and this is also how I knew he wasn't making a move :P
