Might being the operative word, yes he may have been trying to steal (although I think the chances of him trying to steal with nothing here are fairly small) but are you willing to call off all your chips with not much more than bs on the chance that he might have bs, I know I'm not. I think his jam looks more like he has some kind of hand that he is willing to take to showdown even on the small chance that you also have something and call. A steal with nothing is probably less likely here, especially after you had shown some strength pre-flop with your raise. Granted some spazzy players might try a steal with nothing from there but unless I had seen this guy make some real spazzy plays before I would be discounting that. My 2 cents.

An $8,500 guarantee sounds like a $26 buy-in.

At that level they play some good poker and are a better quality of player. If they are shortstacked or are pushing, I would lay down, on that flop, they def have something.

AK or AQ yes, KQ no

if you had AK, then it would have been a decision i think - probably still a fold, but definitely more to think about

I talked to you about this hand yesterday Mat - and my response was basically the same as what Stevo wrote.

Yes, KQ etc might have been in his range pre-flop. But you have to narrow a player's range with subsequent action.

Why, yes, yes I would post about having made a hero call for my tourney life, and correctly guessed/deducing they'd bluffed

But that is like asking why does Dr House have some wonderful mystery to solve each week - you'd hardly have a show about him if he didn't, and I'd hardly post asking for justification if I was right (aside from to brag of course)


I guess it boils down to thinking everyone plays like/similar me - i wouldn't have jammed that flop if I connected, or had an overpair, I'd have made sure I got all their chips by checking and waiting for the short stacks c-bet. Hell, if i'd had a made hand in his position, i'd have raised me in the first place. But I put all that in my original post, so I'll just STFU and listen to others (being the very reason I posted in the first palce!)

But thank you to all so far - I don't thinks I'll be trying to be that clever in future, and most likely be more profitable for it

If he was putting you on AQ or AK with your pre-flop raise, then id be pretty scared to see an A, K or Q on subsequent streets if im holding JJ.

Maybe he crapped himself and wasn't prepared to possibly give himself a massive decision on the turn or river if a scare card fell.

That first hand he made a "stop n go" play which is a technique for avoiding the race situation ie QQ vs AK all-in pre-flop. You call the initial raise and if no A or K flops you can be fairly confident jamming. AK does better when it gets to see all 5 community cards.

The second hand you should check-call to the river.
