The range that beats you here is extremely small, KQ, AK, 88 and that's it. The rest of his range is made up of worse aces. I would flat turn and give villain a chance to bluff river or even value bet worse aces

Played well

I don't like folding the turn, if this is your concern/confusion then do not call the flop.

Good ol Latvian aggression there!

He is raising from the hijack - I perhaps would consider reraising preflop to 1650, narrow his range and work from there. I think because you flat call there hands like K10,K9,K8/7s are definitely in his raise range from the HJ.

As played, the turn decision is pretty tough. Not sure what I would do there.

I can understand your reasoning, i did consider it.

1650 would be too big a 3-bet though.

1150 -1300 would be more like it.

Interestingly played out.

I visualised myself in your position and had some thoughts about play to the turn, ( I checked the spoiler later)

1) I can understand the flat call pre flop to play the smallball approach, My way of thinking was that you both had an M value of around 30 so the stacks were deep. If it was me in that position even with the villain being new to the table I most likely would have 3 bet here for reasons of reducing the odds for the blinds to join in and also being in position on the villain, May have taken a small pot there or most likely getting checked to post flop and having control during the hand.

2) On the flop what was his reason for leading out? was it a c bet (most likely on that board), was it a half pot bet on a flush draw? Again villain has control of he pot so a call by the hero is questionable. In this situation I most likely would have taken a stab with a raise to about 2300,your hand is quite possibly the best right now, if not you will know soon enough and still have a stack of around 5000 if you decide to fold with an M of approx 17. I know he most likely would not have led out with a King, He may be trying to get a cheap flush draw with QT spades or QJ spades or other hijack opening hands. Again if he had 88 he would most likely not lead out. He may have AA but considering you are holding one it is a long shot and again you will know soon enough. I believe he was taking a stab at the pot and would have folded to resistance.

3) He leads out with 2/3 pot size bet when the Ace hits the turn, suspicion confirmed. Now you are in a situation where you suspect he has either a weaker Ace, Same Ace, smaller pair, Flush draw, Broadway draw or AIR. what range does he put you on to make that bet? does he think you will fold AQ or a smaller pair? Does he suspect you called his flop bet with a draw? I doubt he will fold to a raise here so i can understand flating him here.

4) 2 ofClubs on the river is an insignificant card. I can understand his bet of 3,333 here as an atempt to value bet as he believes he has the best hand here, you have not given him any reason to think otherwise unless you flopped big, but I aint to sure he is worried about that.

Again I refer to the fact that the betting became expensive for you to call his bets as you were not in control, You may have won the pot earlier rather than splitting it if you had taken control preflop.

This is my opinion not criticism. This would have most likely been my play..

Nice post ozdemon.

Im not going to criticize the bit i have quoted, but just make a comment.

Readless as we are in this hand (villains first hand at table) its very hard to apply this type of thinking to a hand until we know a little more about our villain.

Too often i think, hero's will often say something like "i was representing the ace" or similar, how could he call/raise/whatever, however this type of play only works against players who actually think about an opponents range, rather than just their own cards. Its pretty easy to 'out think' yourself in some situations, i know im guilty of this a lot.
