check/fold

I wouldn't have even fired out a bet on that turn.

First hand, why get too involved when you are more than often beat?

In one of those stars 180 seat tournaments, A4 or A10 would have called that raise pre flop. Alot of people playing those like to chip up early or bust out.

Productive day @ work for you I see GA ;)
Note to self: Fold Aces on the bubble.......

It the first few levels its easy to play like this and set mine with small pairs.

I have some questions though:

- obviously stack size (BB/M/CSI or whatever you use) is going to be important here, as well as things like ICM (which i need to learn more about), but we can probably agree that our 77 UTG won't always be a fold, and there could be a time (especially if we are short handed) where we can profitably raise.

Therefore, at what point of the tournament does this hand become a raising hand (if ever)?

(im gonna start another thread on this, but im also really interested in how people play medium/small pairs in 6max cash games too.)

this is my theory

in a tournament, the majority of the time you have between 50 and 10 bb. most of that is towards the 10-30bb type.

the problem with having 20bb, is that a standard 3x raise, and a standard 5x cbet change the dynamics of your game a lot, because 20bb is usually comfortable, but 10-13bb is not.

as a result, middle pocket pairs have significant reverse implied odds with these types of stack sizes.

so in general, i prefer to play cautiously with them when i have that middling stack size.

so as a rule of thumb, i only play them aggressively if i am prepared to stack off with them unimproved.

i.e TT utg with 13bb is a raise/get it in (maybe even open shove pre), so is 33 from the button. but with 30bb i play them cautiously.

what do we think about this strategy?

I like it and will trial it for 2 weeks to try and see its results (and post them).

To be more rigid tho we will get raised about 50% of the time we limp & then be OOP and showing no real strength at any time and likely face a c-bet from raiser which will push us off our 77.

So.......

I guess folding them might be optimal. Meh, we will find out in a fortnight.

Yeah I was more thinking of limping behind someone else rather than open limping.
