cutting the deck

Can someone please tell me the rules for cutting the deck.

I always thought the player behind the dealer cut the deck but this came up at the venue last night and no one was really sure.

Can the dealer refuse a request from another player who wants to cut the deck or can the dealer elect to cut the deck themselves?

When the deck is being cut, is there a limit on the number of cuts being made?

Pretty sure that cutting the deck differs depending on the competition you play in i.e. it could be different in different pub poker leagues.

In 888pl the cutoff player (behind the button) cuts the deck, and usually makes one cut, ensuring that the cut is made with at least 5 cards, and leaving at least 5 cards on the bottom.

In terms of the dealer refusing to allow a certain player to cut the cards and wanting to cut them themselves, well that sounds a little suss to me.

Why wasn't the TC called over in this instance?

the reason someone else cuts the deck is just a matter of peace of mind - it reduces the chances that the dealer could cheat by rigging the deck somehow.

as for the person cutting the deck, it should always be a single cut of approximately half the deck - after all, the whole point of a cut is so that the top and bottom cards are not in their original place

what was the player cutting the cards doing that people didn't want him/her to do?

I also assume a reason for cutting the deck to the right and not the left, is so that no player with money already in the pot is actively touching the deck.

This didn't become a big issue. When the player behind the dealer reached to cut the cards they were told by the dealer that when she deals she cuts the cards herself. This generated a discussion, not a debate, on the table about what the rule is. That is why I posted it on the forum.

fair enough, good post.

i would politely tell her that she can cut herself in her home games, but in 888pl they must be cut be someone else.

the TD is employed for a reason guys

to know and uphold the rules of the game

why the hell dont we use them

instead of just asking here, i would much rather call the TD over as it happened ask the question in front of the whole group there and then, then you get the corrrect answer spelled out to all those involved and everyone learns

unfortunaltey it is unlikely that you will get all the people at the table together again so only some will learn and go foward and others wont.

I was told that a 'one handed' cut is prefered rather than 'two handed' to reduce card tampering by cutter.
