ACES

Postby 666HARPS666 » Fri Feb 12, 2010 1:07 am

Trivial question .

An ACE is considered the highest card in the deck .
It can be used as an ACE high flush , ACE high straight .
But it can also make an ACE to 5 straight .
so does this mean the value of this card is a 1 , & then meaning a 1 is the highest card ,
or a 14 ,or a kind of joker type card ?

Thanks

Damn i,ve lost my power tool

How do you define the King Queen Jack in the cards?
Are they all ten. or 11 12 13? Making the ace 14?

It always depends on the games your playing. Most use ace as the highest card with trumps taking the positions above a la euchre. Other games just play the ace as the highest of the suit, Spades, hearts e.t.c

In blackjack, the confusion is caused by the ace being a dual card, As it is either 1, or 11, However in a lot of betting options, the ace is turned into a 1, such as doubling down. Or is restricted in the number of cards it can take, e.g. splitting aces can only take one card only. So whilst being a powerful card, can actually be restrictive for when players are playing it.

In baccarat an ace is always counted as a 1 whilst 10,j,q,j are all counted as 0, with 9 being the magic number.

Not actually helping the question here.

Guess the best way of describing the value of the ace is that it is the ace. :-). No number is associated with it. It just is the ace in the deck. :-)

Sorry Brett mate, but need to pull you up here, as that is not correct. If you double down on 10 and pull an A, you have 21....

But I think ultimately the answer to Harps' question is "because that is the rules of the game".....

Wrong way of looking at it Jmack.

If you have A 3 is 4 or 14 if you double down it is counted only as 4. Pontoon rules.
If you receive an ace it still stands at 11.

Ditto with the old Ace,9 double down, only counts as ten, plus whatever card you pull.

Ummm...maybe I've been playing the wrong game, but i am sure you can only double down if you have 9, 10 or 11 with your first 2 cards??!

Therefore, it is only the double down on 11 that renders any Ace catch a 1.....

In your example, you have DECLARED the Ace a 1....you still had the choice between 1 or 11......And for the record, why would you double down when you already have 20??
