What Type of Poker Player are You?

Forgive my extreme boredom here, but i was hoping to play some poker tonight, but the website is down, and it was too late to go find a place to play NPL.

Bobs post and the recent talk about me probably being a pretty aggressive player, and bruce being at the opposite extreme, got me thinking

What type of player are you now (be honest), and where do you think you can improve your game?

I would have to say that i am more aggressive than most players out there. i like to limp with a very wide range of connected and suited cards, hands like 67 suited, and 10 8 suited and 10J are some of my favourites.
if i get any piece of the board, i tend to win big in these pots, as people aren't expecting these sort of hands.

with high cards, i will raise hard, and usually bet the flop regardless if i have hit or not. this will pick me up a lot of small sized pots against Tight opposition who will fold to a continuation bet.

BUT - this strategy also gets me in a lot of tricky situations - especially when i have say flopped middle pair with a draw also, and i have bet hard. i frequently get caught out betting hands like an open ender and flush draw, because i play these hands too aggressively. i often throw away good stacks betting these hands too aggressively.

if u are a calling station, come and sit at my table, its more than likely u will be getting my chips

i find that i play my best game when i am continually telling myself to pick my spots, and this is where i am looking to improve my game.

any thoughts on this?

Just to show you i am really bored, and curious, and i thought it would be interesting to compare the NPL stats of different types of players. (yes i worked out the career stats of these people using my spreadsheet)

The playing styles range from myself at the aggressive end of the spectrum to bruce at the tight end of the spectrum. i consider all of these players to be "good" NPL players (except maybe myself :P). all players here have made state finals multiple times (i think bruce has made them all)

all of these players play noticeably different styles, but remarkably the stats are pretty damn similar. the style i wasn't 100% sure of was bob, but the times i have played with him, he has been tight aggressive but also the capability to bluff.

the only other thing to note is that bob has played a lot at big venues, which is why his place and FT percentages are slightly lower, and bruce has played at the tanunda which is pretty much a given for points most weeks.

other than that, all players here have played in 40-60 runner fields on average.

My first comment would be that you have way too much time on your hands.

My second would be that you definately have way too much time on your hands.

And my third comment would be that you haven't taken into the account the players who don't have a specific style of play and change their style every few hands or as they feel like it.

To be honest, the slighty tight and less aggressive image is one that i want to portray, but in actual fact i am slightly looser with my range of betting hands, especially post-flop. Now in recent times (last season) this got me caught being way too aggressive with less than top pair, and my image has suffered accordingly, an i am getting called with a much larger range of hands than i once was (e.g. people calling with top pair and carp kicker).

So the things that i really need to improve on are restablishing my image as a tight-aggressive player (and to not get caught when i play a little looser than this) and to pick my spot a little better when trying to raise someone off middle pair. I.e. i need to get better at somehow trying to read what the calling stations have - if anyone has any tips on this i will be more than greatful

i have assumed here that the players i have mentioned are "good" players.

there are plenty of "bad" players that fit into these categories, and the reason they are bad is that they play this way all the time. this makes them predictable, and easy to get chips off.

an example is gus hansen - very loose aggressive, but that doesn't mean he goes all in on 72 every time he plays the hand.

even though he would definitely mix it up, and play different styles at different times, he is predominately a certain style.

My name is spelt wrong. *Kleemann.

:D

Hey man, when I heard that website was down, I went to Pooraka :D I'd say I'm tight aggressive. I will only play a small range of hands - if I am raising, I have something worth playing. But then, I use this to my advantage too - I have made loose calls against good players, knowing that they think (for me to call) I have something good. Prime example: Last Thursday, at the Kingsford. Blinds 25/50, I'm BB. UTG is a friend and shows me one of his cards, the folds.

"Dude, you can't do that, you have to show the entire table."
"Fine."

He shows a K of diamonds.

Gareth Hill (extremely good player, tight-aggressive) raises to 150 after its folded round to him, from no 3. Its folded around to me. I look down at K8 offsuit. I insta call, knowing full well that Gareth will think I have something (to call, and especially an insta call).

Flop J 7 4, rainbow. I check. Gareth bets 150. I raise to 400. After a while, he folds and mutters something about JT. I muck.

"Good fold, I had AJ."
"Thought so."

I called because I felt I had the ability to buy the pot from Gareth at a later stage during the hand. And with such a standard raise, I didn't sense any particular strength.

So yeah. I'm tight aggressive.

I love this thread and how you have made it a good topic. Chit with all the bitchin it's good to see something of value. And you've almost pegged me down to the right numbers benny the cunt.

As for my style well, I used to play so tight I thought that Dakta was gonna call me fishes arsehole as that's water tight. So I tried to be more aggressive so as to build a table image and I got called down all the time as they thought I was bluffing. Well I was sometimes.

So, I found my comfort zone with a bit of mish mash of tight, slow playing good cards, trapping, and the occational aggression. Most of all I like to try and see if people have tells or I can read what they are playing. Doesn't work all the time but when I'm hot I'm hot.

i would say that i also buy a lot of pots in this manner - i just have to pick my spot a lot more carefully, as people know that i have a wider range of starting hands than most.

Best thing about Gus is he leaves enough doubt in their minds as to whether he's got good cords or bad cards.

The other night the Magician went over the top of Gus's opening bet with an ALLIN holding AKo from memory. Gus said, "WOW". and started nodding his head from side to side and said "I'm finding this one hard to fold as I have a 10".

The Magician say's you can't be serious and Gus says "well they are suited. Now from memory the Magician put in aroud $300k about half or more of Gus's stack. Gus say "why not I call" and the Magician cannot believe him as he pushed in his chips and he actually said "Are you serious"? and with that Gus drops his 10 8 suited.

The Magician was running around dumb founded and asking people "do you believe that, do you believe he's called my AK with 10 8"????

Well you know Gus, and 8 hits on the flop and it was all over red rover and the Magician was in total shock along with everyone else.

I'd love to have the balls to not only play almost every hand but to raise preflop in any position. He is a true gambler of the higheest ELK :)
