Umm....WTF???

I think he is trying to say it is not unheard of for companies to become successful entering a marketplace already dominated by other companies (Holden/Ford?)

Also, competition is never a bad thing.
In fact for players in the 888PL, the NPL having some success here in SA can only be good, as competition forces all concerned to 'up the ante' so to speak. Not implying the 888PL needs to (atm), but it can only benefit players if yet more innovations are introduced to the league due to competition, yes?

I played the first NPL event back at Parafield Gardens the other Sunday. Only the FR and I thought that the event was very well run. I didn't stay for the $20 game and haven't been back. Not sure why. But they had decent equipment and obvious support from the venue. It was heavily staffed but this was more perhaps because it was their first game. I didn't like their blue chips on FT (not that I got that far) being 10K instead of 5's. It meant the betting could only be done in multiples of the blinds. I.e. 10 / 20K blinds you couldn't bet 45K. Only 20, 30, 40 etc.

I agree that competition is good and can drive innovation. I am a strong supporter of 888PL and have only in the last few months ventured to other leagues. Multiple reasons for that decision but the main motivator was so I didn't get what in my usual circles I would refer to as Cellar Palate (a wine term attributed to winemakers that only drink and rate their own wine and thus don't know what they are competing with). Most of you have already gone through this choice stage and made your decision. Myself, never really did that.

888PL run a professional league and it's a matter for the players to find a balance between chasing the dollars vs their perceived better or worse experiences at other leagues. I see a number of 888PL players at other league events. So I think while some will choose to be solely dedicated to one league there is room to expect players to play one league one night and another league on another. Just like online poker where players may play multiple platforms.

Personally, I have enjoyed mixing it up. It has actually helped my poker playing against a wide range of people. I was getting a bit bored playing the same people all the time at 888PL.

Perhaps, the leagues could look at a joint tournament where they all field teams in different events. Then the true rivalry could take place and would promote poker and hopefully attract more members.

Lastly, if anyone is concerned about receiving marketing from another league they can easily request to have their details removed from the database.

Ben, all the leagues would be taking the same risk. Only the leagues that would be worried about their product and loyalty from their member base should be worried about working with the other leagues on a joint competition. It would be a true 'Pub Poker' decider on who has the best players and I would think spark a lot of interest. I guess take motor racing as an example. How boring would it be with just Holden's racing V8's or Honda racing bikes, or Ferrari racing F1's? At the end of the day these manufacturers obviously see it as an advantage to race against the competition for the common good of selling more products. Same could apply in Pub Poker, if an 888PL member won then that may encourage new members to join the game and league. Get a pro to help promote it and get it televised. Just an idea.

Though could take some negotiating and planning.

what advantage would there be to providing time, effort and money to promote a joint competition when you could spend that same time, effort and money into promoting and growing your own company?

would harvey norman go to radio rentals and say "we need to promote tv's to our customers, lets do it together"

of course they wouldn't, they would spend their time trying to grow their own business and increase their own market share

you are basically treating 888pl as a service provider, but they are still out to make a profit

Who says 888PL can't make a profit from this? Run internal qualifying games in venue. Get the venues that already support 888PL to support the initiative. If an 888PL player wins then hopefully that would results on more bums on seats in the future which is, as I understand it, where the profit is made.

Each league can decide on how their members qualify. If they choose not to run specific qualifying events and just use their existing leader board or finals structure then that's their decision. But there would be a possibility to run extra events thus generating profits on the lead up to the main joint comp.

The winning league would have bragging rights and should be able to use this to attract more members and possibly new players altogether if it is marketed correctly. Who is the best 'pub poker' player in Australia?

How do you determine who represents what league? You've stated that you saw 888pl players at the NPL game. What league are they?

If there are qualifying games, what stops an "NPL" player playing and winning?

It's an idea, but one I can't see ever working. And what does it matter which league is better?

That would be up to each individual league to decide.

If there are qualifying games, what stops an "NPL" player playing and winning?

Nothing would be stopping them. But should they qualify through a particular league then they would be representing that league.

...what does it matter which league is better?

You tell me... Why do people follow a brand? And what does that brand get out of their success?
