In the CBI I mentioned above, I asked what the size of the pot was... You know the normal pile of chips splashed in the middle on top of the preflop muck (not when its my turn to deal though)... I wasnt in the hand though.
No one answered, and the dealer didnt attempt to make a count, so I layed out the chips as any casino dealer (or ex) would have, only to be told by the TD not to touch the chips... OK, fair enough I wasnt the dealer...
But he then told me, not being in the hand, I had NO right to even ask the pot size...
I responded "Well I like to observe opponents in hands Im not involved in, and wanted to see the pot compared to a bet size, I asked the dealer for a count and he ignored me"
Seriously, am I wrong to want to know a count when not involved in the hand?

In Limit and No Limit games the pot is to NEVER be counted. You can ask the dealer to stack the chips neatly by denominations but it is never to be cut down and counted for players. You can never ask or the pot size. Rule of Poker!

So in answer, yes you were wrong to ask. And why are you asking a question like that when a hand is in the process of playing out?

This. I was going to ask This.

I understand you want to be able to best interpret how the hand was being played out for future reference, but I could see your comments and actions possibly influencing play.

I think we all know everyones position on this subject already.

can you say to a dealer please put in stacks of 10 for me to count by myself?

or can he just stack a pile of 100s, a pile of 500s etc.

Just stacked in denominations. It is to clean the pot up and organise it.

thanks garth. thats what i thought, but just making sure

what if a dealer starts cutting it in stacks of 10 for another player, without being asked?

(you would prolly be a tool, but) are you within your rights to tell the dealer to stop this and just leave them stacked in denominations?

not saying i would ever do this, just a hypothetical.

You are well within your rights, as this may affect the outcome of the hand.
But be advised you will be known as THE TOOLBOX for the remainder of the night
